the use of drugs (immunosuppressives) that affect the body's IMMUNE system and lower its resistance to disease. These drugs are used to maintain the survival of the transplanted organs in transplant surgery and to treat autoimmune diseases. The condition may also be produced as a side effect, e.g. after chemotherapy treatment for cancer. In all instances, there is an increased risk of infection.
