ileus

an obstruction of the INTESTINE (often the ILEUM ), which may be mechanical, as a result of worms or a gallstone from the GALL BLADDER , or because of loss of the natural movement of the INTESTINES (peristalsis). This latter condition may be caused by surgery, injury to the spine or PERITONITIS .
