a surgical procedure in which an opening is made in the abdominal wall to which the ILEUM is joined. This creates an artifical ANUS through which the waste contents of the INTESTINES are collected in a special bag. This procedure is undertaken to allow the COLON to heal after surgery or COLITIS , or in association with other surgery in treating cancer of the RECTUM .
