hypoventilation

an abnormally slow rate of shallow breathing that may result from injury or the effects of drugs on the respiratory centre in the brain. The effect is to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood and lessen that of oxygen. Eventually this leads to death from a lack of oxygen supply to cells and tissues.
