an abnormal preoccupation by an individual with the state of his or her health. In its severest form, the person wrongly believes that he or she is suffering from a number of illnesses and is extremely anxious and depressed. Treatment is by means of psychotherapy and antidepressant drugs, but the condition tends to be difficult to cure.
