hydrocortisone
a STEROID glucocorticoid HORMONE produced and released by the CORTEX of the ADRENAL GLANDS (a CORTICOSTEROID ). It is closely related to CORTISONE , being released in response to stress and playing a significant part in carbohydrate METABOLISM . Medically it has a number of uses, especially in the treatment of ADDISON'S DISEASE , inflammatory, allergic and rheumatic conditions, e.g. eczema and rheumatoid arthritis. Hydrocortisone is contained in ointments in creams or given by mouth or injection, depending on the condition under treatment. Prolonged use may cause SIDE EFFECTS , including PEPTIC ULCERS , stunting of growth in children, CUSHING'S SYNDROME and damage to bone and muscle tissue.
Hydrocortisone is used to replace cortisol (a steroid normally produced by the body) when your body doesn't make enough of it. Hydrocortisone is also used to treat lupus (a disease in which immune system attacks body attacks many of its own organs); certain types of arthritis; certain lung, skin, eye, kidney, blood, thyroid, stomach, and intestinal disorders; severe allergies; and certain types of cancer.I Hydrocortisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by replacing steroids that are normally produced naturally by the body. It also works to reduce swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works.
