A hydatid is the cyst-like larval form of certain ECHINOCOCCUS tapeworm species. After infection, these larvae may develop into fluid-filled CYSTS, most commonly in organs such as the LIVER and LUNGS. Hydatid cysts grow slowly and may damage nearby tissues by pressure or cause complications if they rupture. The presence of hydatid cysts in the body is known as HYDATID DISEASE or echinococcosis.
