1. the natural process to arrest bleeding (see HAEMORRHAGE ), involving blood COAGULATION and contraction of a ruptured BLOOD VESSEL . 2. One of a number of surgical procedures designed to arrest bleeding, such as the use of LIGATURES and DIATHERMY . A haemostatic substance stops or prevents haemorrhage, e.g. phytomenadone.
