Medical Term
haemoglobin
the respiratory substance contained within the red BLOOD cells, which contains a pigment responsible for the red colour of blood. It consists of the pigment HAEM and the protein globin and is responsible for the transport of oxygen around the body. Oxygen is picked up in the lungs by arterial blood and transported to the tissues, where it is released. This (venous) blood is then returned to the lungs to repeat the process.
