a part of the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM comprising the central part of the spinal cord and the CEREBRAL CORTEX and outer layer of the CEREBELLUM in the brain. It is brown-grey in colour and is the coordination point between the nerves of the central nervous system. It is composed of nerve cell bodies, DENDRITES , SYNAPSES , glial cells (supporting cells, see GLIA ) and BLOOD VESSELS .
