grand mal

a convulsive epileptic fit involving involuntary muscular contractions and lack of respiration. The latter produces bluish skin and lips ( CYANOSIS ) during the tonic phase. Convulsive movements follow, and often the tongue is bitten and bladder control is lost (the clonic phase). On awakening, the patient has no recall of the event.
