goitre

swelling of the neck because of THYROID GLAND enlargement. The thyroid tries to counter the dietary lack of iodine necessary to produce thyroid hormone by increasing the output, thereby becoming larger. The endemic or simple goitre is the result. Other types are caused by HYPERPLASIA and autoimmune diseases, e.g. when antibodies are produced against antigens in the thyroid gland.
