glial cells
CONNECTIVE TISSUE in the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM composed of a variety of cells. The macroglia are divided into astrocytes, which surround brain capillaries, and oligodendrocytes, which form MYELIN sheaths. The microglia perform a mainly scavenging function. Glial cells are present at ten to fifty times the number of NEURONS in the nervous system.
