an erosion of the MUCOSA in the STOMACH caused by such agents as acid and BILE . It may penetrate the muscle and perforate the stomach wall (see PERFORATION ). Typical symptoms include burning pain, belching and possibly nausea when the stomach is empty or soon after eating. Relief may be found with ANTACID compounds, but surgery may be necessary.
