flat foot

an absence of the arch of the FOOT so that the inner edge lies flat on the ground. It may occur in children in whom the LIGAMENTS of the foot are soft, or in older, obese adults or those who stand for long periods. Treatment is by means of exercises, built-up footwear and, in extreme cases, surgery.
