fibrous tissue

a tissue type that occurs abundantly throughout the body. White fibrous tissue consists of fibres of COLLAGEN , a PROTEIN with a high tensile strength and unyielding structure, and forms ligaments, sinews and scar tissue, and occurs in the skin. Yellow fibrous tissue is composed of the fibres of another protein elastin. It is very elastic and occurs in ligaments that are subjected to frequent stretching, such as those in the back of the neck. It also occurs in arterial walls and in the walls of the alveoli (see ALVEOLUS ), and in the dermis layer of the SKIN .
