the formation of thickened CONNECTIVE TISSUE or scar tissue, usually as a result of injury or inflammation. This may affect the lining of the alveoli (see ALVEOLUS ) of the lungs (pulmonary interstitial fibrosis) and causes breathlessness. See also CYSTIC FIBROSIS .
