facial paralysis

PARALYSIS of the FACIAL NERVE , which leads to a loss of function in the muscles of the face, producing a lack of expression in the affected side. It occurs in the condition known as BELL'S PALSY , in which there may also be a loss of taste and inability to close the eye. The condition is often temporary, if caused by INFLAMMATION , and recovers in time. If the nerve itself is damaged by injury, however, or if the person has suffered a stroke, the condition is likely to be permanent.
