epiglottitis

INFLAMMATION of the MUCOUS MEMBRANE of the EPIGLOTTIS . Swelling of the tissues may obstruct the airway and swift action may be necessary, i.e. a TRACHEOSTOMY , to avoid a fatality. The other symptoms of epiglottitis are sore throat, fever and a croup-like cough, and it occurs mainly in children, usually during the winter.
