epidermis

the outer layer of the SKIN , which comprises four layers and overlies the dermis. The top three layers are continually renewed as cells from the innermost germinative layer (called the Malpighian layer or stratum germinativum), which are pushed outwards. The topmost layer (stratum corneum) is made up of dead cells where the CYTOPLASM has been replaced by KERATIN . This layer is thickest on the palms and on the soles of the feet.
