the procedure of putting fluid into the rectum for purposes of cleansing or therapy. An evacuant enema removes faeces and consists of soap in water or olive oil, while a barium enema is given to permit an X-ray of the colon to be taken. The compound BARIUM SULPHATE is opaque to X-rays. The insertion of drugs into the rectum is a therapeutic enema.
