endorphin

one of a group of PEPTIDES that occur in the brain and have pain-relieving qualities similar to morphine. They are derived from a substance in the PITUITARY and are involved in endocrine control. In addition to their opiate effects, they are involved in urine output, depression of respiration, sexual activity and learning (see also ENCEPHALIN ).
