encephalopathy

any disease affecting the BRAIN or an abnormal condition of the brain's structure and function. It refers in particular to degenerative and chronic conditions such as Wernicke's encephalopathy, which is caused by a thiamine deficiency (see VITAMIN B ) and associated with alcoholism.
