emetic
a substance that causes VOMITING . Direct emetics, such as mustard in water, copper sulphate, alum or a lot of salty water, irritate the stomach while indirect emetics, such as apomorphine and ipecacuanha, act on the centre of the brain that controls the act of vomiting. Tickling the throat is also classed as an emetic (indirect). Emetics tend to be used little nowadays, but great care must be exercised if their use is advocated.
