strictly, a compound that dissolves in water to produce a solution, containing ions, that is able to conduct an electrical charge. In the body, electrolytes occur in the blood PLASMA , all fluid and interstitial fluid, and correct concentrations are essential for normal metabolic activity. Some diseases alter the electrolyte balance, either through vomiting or diarrhoea or because the kidney is malfunctioning. The correct balance can be restored through oral or intravenous dosage or by DIALYSIS .
