digitalis

a powder derived from the leaf of the wild foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), which is used in cases of HEART disease. It acts in two ways: strengthening each heartbeat and increasing each pause ( DIASTOLE ) so that the damaged heart muscle has longer to rest. It also has a diuretic effect. Digitalis poisoning may occur with prolonged use or an overdose. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, blurred vision, irregular heartbeat and, possibly, breathing difficulties and unconsciousness.
