Medical Term
detached retina
the condition when the RETINA of the EYE becomes detached from the choroid (a layer of the eyeball with blood vessels and pigment that absorbs excess light, preventing blurred VISION ). The detachment may be caused by a TUMOUR or INFLAMMATION or by the leaking of vitreous humour through holes in the retina to fill the space between the retina and choroid, thus disrupting the fine attachments. The condition can be corrected by surgery, whereby heat binds the retina and choroid together using scarred tissue.
