1. the technique whereby an individual builds up resistance to an ALLERGEN by taking gradually increasing doses of the substance over a period of time. 2. in the treatment of PHOBIAS , when a patient is gradually faced with the thing that is feared and concurrently learns to relax and reduce anxiety.
