dermatitis
an INFLAMMATION of the SKIN that is similar in many respects to, and often interchanged with, ECZEMA . It is characterized by ERYTHEMA , pain and PRURITIS . Several forms can be identified: contact dermatitis is caused by the skin coming into contact with a substance to which it is sensitive. A large range of compounds and materials may cause such a reaction. Treatment usually involves the use of a CORTICOSTEROID . Light dermatitis manifests itself as a reddening and blistering of skin exposed to sunlight, and this occurs on hands, face and neck, usually during the summer months. Some individuals become sensitized by drugs or perfumes in cosmetics, while others have an innate sensitivity. Erythroderma or exfoliative dermatitis involves patches of reddened skin that thicken and peel off. It is often associated with other skin conditions, e.g. PSORIASIS . Corticosteroids form a central part of the treatment in this case.
