delirium tremens
a form of DELIRIUM , often caused by partial or total withdrawal of alcohol after a period of excessive intake. Symptoms are varied and include insomnia, agitation, confusion and fever, often with vivid hallucinations. The treatment involves lessening and removing the dependence on alcohol, which is accompanied by sedation with drugs such as BENZODIAZEPINE .
