cortisone

a glucocorticosteroid (see CORTICOSTEROID ) hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. It is used medically to treat deficiency of CORTICOSTEROID cortex. It is used medically to treat deficiency of CORTICOSTEROID hormones. Deficiency occurs in ADDISON'S DISEASE and if the adrenal glands have had to be surgically removed for some reason. Its use is restricted because it causes severe SIDE EFFECTS , including damage to the muscle and bone, eye changes, stomach ulcers and bleeding, as well as nervous and hormonal disturbances.
