corticosteroid

any steroid hormone manufactured by the adrenal cortex, of which there are two main types. Glucocorticosteroids, such as cortisol and CORTISONE , are required by the body mainly for glucose metabolism and for responding to stress. Mineralocorticosteroids, e.g. aldosterone, regulate the salt and water balance. Both groups are manufactured synthetically and used in the treatment of various disorders.
