corn and bunion

also: corn

a corn is a small, localized cone - shaped portion of hardened, thickened skin occurring on or between the toes. The point of the cone, known as 'the eye', points inwards and causes pain. It is caused by pressure from poorly - fitting shoes. A bunion is found over the joint at the base of the largest toe and is also caused by tight - fitting footwear. With a bunion, the joint between the toe and the first metatarsal bone becomes swollen and forms a lump beneath the thickened skin because of bending caused by the shoe. A hammer toe is similar but involves the second toe, which becomes bent at the joint to resemble a hammer because shoes or boots are too tight or pointed.
