chorionic gonadotrophic hormone

a HORMONE produced during PREGNANCY by the PLACENTA , large amounts of which are present in the URINE of a pregnant woman. The presence of this hormone is the basis of most pregnancy tests. It is given by injection to treat cases of delayed PUBERTY and, with another hormone, called follicle - stimulating hormone, to women who are sterile because of a failure in ovulation. It may also be used to treat PREMENSTRUAL TENSION .
