a volatile and colourless liquid that is a compound of carbon, hydrogen and chlorine (CHCl 3 ). It was once widely in use as a general ANAESTHETIC , but it affects the rhythm of the HEART and also causes LIVER damage. It is little used today, except in very low concentrations as preservative and in some LINIMENTS .
