chloral hydrate

a type of SEDATIVE drug that is given mainly to elderly people and children. Within half an hour of being taken by mouth (usually as a SYRUP ), it induces sleep and its effects last for about eight hours. It is useful when used sparingly but harmful in large doses, causing toxic effects and addiction.
