catabolism

the biochemical processes within the body ( METABOLISM ) are divided into two different sorts - those that build up or produce (synthesize) substances, which is anabolism, and those that break down material ( LYSIS ), known as catabolism. In catabolism, more complex materials are broken down into simpler ones with a release of energy, as occurs during the digestion of food.
