either of the two large arteries (see ARTERY ) in the neck that branch and provide the Blood supply to the head and neck. The paired common carotid arteries arise from the AORTA on the left side of the HEART and form the innominate artey on the right. These continue up on either side of the neck and branch into the internal CAROTID BODY and the external carotid body.
