cardiac massage
a means of restoring the heartbeat if this has suddenly ceased. Direct cardiac massage, which is only feasible if the person is in hospital, involves massaging the HEART by hand through an INCISION in the chest wall. Another method, used in conjunction with ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION , is by rhythmic compression of the chest wall while the person is laid on his or her back.
