a fine BLOOD VESSEL that communicates with an ARTERIOLE or VENULE . Capillaries form networks in most tissues and have walls that are only one cell thick. There is a constant exchange of substances (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, etc) between the capillaries, arterioles and venules, supplying the needs of the surrounding tissues.
