a complete and continuous absence of the vital reflexes controlled by centres in the brain stem (breathing, pupillary responses, etc). Tests are performed by independent doctors, repeated after an interval, before death is formally confirmed. At this point, organs may be removed for transplant providing suitable permission has been obtained.
