a disease that causes INFLAMMATION of the NERVES because of a dietary lack of VITAMIN B1 (thiamine) and results in fever, paralysis, palpitations and occasionally heart failure. It occurs mainly in countries where the staple diet is polished rice, although similar symptoms are displayed by some people suffering from alcoholism.
