autoimmune disease
one of a number of conditions resulting from the production of antibodies by the body that attack its own tissues. For reasons that are not yet understood the immune system (see IMMUNITY ) loses the ability to distinguish between 'self' and 'non- self'. Autoimmune disease is currently thought to be the cause of a number of disorders, including acquired haemolytic ANAEMIA .
