autism

a severe mental disorder of childhood in which there is a failure in emotional development and an inability to communicte. There are accompanying behavioural problems, and autism may be caused by brain damage and genetic factors. Autistic individuals exhibit stereotyped patterns of behaviour and may or may not be intellectually impaired. They require intensive and prolonged education in order to progress.
