Medical Term
asphyxia
the state of suffocation during which breathing eventually stops and oxygen fails to reach tissues and organs. It occurs as a result of drowning, strangulation and inhaling poisonous fumes. It can also result from obstruction of the air passages either by a foreign body lodged at the opening (e.g. a piece of food) or swelling as a result of a wound or infection.
