artificial respiration

an emergency procedure carried out when normal repiration has ceased in order to ventilate the lungs artificially, usually referred to as 'mouth-to-mouth resuscitation'. In hospital, where a seriously ill person is unable to breathe unaided, artificial respiration is achieved by means of a machine known as ventilator.
