artificial insemination

Artificial insemination is a fertility treatment in which SPERM is placed directly into the female reproductive tract to help achieve PREGNANCY.

Artificial insemination is an assisted reproductive procedure in which SPERM is introduced into the CERVIX or UTERUS without sexual intercourse. The aim is to increase the chance that sperm will reach an EGG and result in FERTILIZATION. The sperm may come from the person's partner or from a donor. The main types include ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION BY HUSBAND (AIH) and ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION BY DONOR (AID). A commonly used method is INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION, where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of OVULATION.
