Argentaffin Cell
An argentaffin cell is a specialized NEUROENDOCRINE CELL found mainly in the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT that produces SEROTONIN and other chemical messengers.
Argentaffin cells are specialized hormone-producing CELLS found within the epithelial lining of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT, primarily concentrated in the crypts of Lieberkühn. They are a type of ENTEROENDOCRINE CELL and part of the NEUROENDOCRINE SYSTEM. These cells contain substances that react with silver-based stains, which gives them their name. Argentaffin cells produce SEROTONIN and help regulate digestive functions such as intestinal movement and secretion. Abnormal growth of these cells may be associated with some NEUROENDOCRINE TUMORS.
Argentaffin cells are special cells in the digestive system that release chemical signals helping control digestion.
• Specialized neuroendocrine cells • Found mainly in the gastrointestinal tract • Produce serotonin and other signaling substances • Help regulate digestive activity • Identified by their reaction with silver staining methods • Can be associated with some neuroendocrine tumors
