appendix

a blind-ended tube that is an appendage of various organs within the body. It normally refers to the vermiform appendix, which is about 9 to 10 cm long and projects from the CAECUM of the large INTESTINE . It has no known function and can become the site of infection, probably as the result of obstruction. See APPENDICITIS .
