antimetabolite

one of a group of drugs, used particularly in the treatment of certain cancers, that mimic substances (metabolites) present in the cells. The antimetabolites combine with ENZYMES that would otherwise use the metabolites for cell growth. Hence they reduce the growth of cancer cells but also have attendant SIDE EFFECTS , which can be severe.
